Bikes and Blades
One hundred years ago, before interstates, freeways and fast
moving automobiles dotted the landscape of northern Minnesota,
the railroad was the lifeline in and out of the lake country.
Loggers flocked north to harvest the logs that built our nation.
Today the railroad is gone, but in its path lies a paved
recreational lifeline, a safe and scenic corridor for our
citizens and visitors to experience and enjoy while maintaining
a vibrant and healthy life style so important in these times.
The Paul Bunyan Trail stretches approximately 70 miles from
the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd/Baxter to the Heartland
Trail
west of Walker. After leaving Brainerd the trail passes
through Merrifield, Lake Hubert, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Pine
River, Backus, Hackensack and through the Chippewa National
Forest where it intersects with the Heartland Trail along
Highway 34 between Walker and Akeley. Here at Eagles Nest we are
fortunate to have the Trail at the end of our driveway. The
resort is situated adjacent to the trail at approximately
milepost #17. The idea that Mom, Dad and the kids can enjoy the
company of each other while receiving the benefits of physical
exercise amid such a unique and beautiful setting goes to the
heart of our business philosophy. Our fleet of adult one speed
bicycles is at your disposal. We recommend and supply helmets.
We also provide a child size pull behind trailer and a tag along
ride behind bike. If you have a bike rack or room in the
boat be sure to bring the bikes along, especially the kids’
bikes since we’re not able to provide youth bicycles. Martins
Sport Shop provides rental bicycles and in-line skates.
Trailblazer
Bikes also has rental bikes. Both shops are located
in downtown Nisswa. The Bunyan Bike Shuttle offers a pick-up or
drop-off shuttle service at any location along the trail at a
reasonable rate for those interested in a one way ride or skate.
In addition to the Paul Bunyan Trail there are several great
rides in the lakes area many of which can be accessed by way of
the Trail. We are happy to provide maps and pertinent
information for your excursion. Whether on a bike, blades or a
leisurely stroll,, the trail can provide hours of enjoyment and
access to some of the most picturesque terrain in our state. We
highly recommend you make use of this wonderful asset while
staying with us. |
